The Sacrifice begins in 1940, a couple of years after the last book. As the family is dealing with the shunning of one of the daughters, Leah is mourning her loss. Leah begins to move on in life with Smithy Gid and a tragedy forces her to make tough decisions. How my heart broke at Leah being faced with a decision that would change her life forever. A separate tragedy changes the courses of the twins and they begin life after the kneeling age. Jumping ahead a few years, we see how life is sorting out for everyone. I felt tremendous respect for Leah and her sacrifice. I was intrigued by Hannah's choice of mate and interested by Mary Ruth's choices for her life. Yet, nothing prepared me for the return of the shunned daughter. Lots of loss but a great look at the power of a family sticking together in the tough times.
